Funeral Preplanning: Shop BEFORE You Drop

By Gail Rubin

If your car died, would you run right out and buy the first vehicle at the first dealer you visited? That’s highly unlikely. You’d probably think about what you want in your next car, do some online research, visit a few dealerships, and take some test drives.

So why would you avoid doing advance research about funeral costs, which can be one of the five biggest expenses a family will face? Going to funeral homes to learn about options and costs is a fascinating shopping trip. And it’s a project best done while family members are alive and healthy.

It’s so much easier to investigate your options while you can still laugh about death. After the Grim Reaper has done his job, that’s not the best time to go shopping. Under duress of grief, funeral planning is no picnic.

Just as talking about sex won’t make you pregnant, talking about funerals and end-of-life issues won’t make you dead. Get out there and shop BEFORE you drop.
