Julie Bascom, Age:87

Julie was born in Cuba, February 16, 1935 and as anyone who spoke with her already knew, that adorable accent she could not escape. She came to America in 1956 with the help of a distant aunt who we owe our world to. She was then introduced to the Valdes family who opened they’re hearts and home to her. Creating lifelong relationships with Humberto, Nidia, Angela (Gello) and Miriam, who became her brother and sisters whom she loved and greatly cherished. Soon after that, she met the love of her life, our dad, William Bascom from Akron, Ohio. They were married in October of 1959 and welcomed Scott in September of 1960 and Gayle in January of 1963. She also had the fortune of bringing her mother to United States to help love and care for her growing family.

In the summer of 1967 they we able to buy their first and always “home”.  And in 1978 another very important and proud moment for Mom was when she became an American Citizen! Among other important dates, were the marriages of her children, Scott to Christine in July of 1990 and the marriage of Gayle to Brian in September of 1995. In between those wonderful years were the births of the apple of her eyes….her grandsons, Matthew (Mateo) in May of 1991 and Nicholas (Nicolasi) in August of 1993 who she called “mi vida” or “my life”. They brought her incredible happiness as she grew her wonderful and loving family, watching them both graduate from college and begin their journey in life.

Throughout her marriage she forged very strong relationships with our fathers side of the family, especially with our dad’s eldest sister, Aunt Grace and her family, children Joe, Kim, and Terri. Aunt Grace took my mom under her wing and lovingly, welcomed her…even though at first they didn’t speak the same language! Our mother thought the world of our Aunt Grace!  And up until mom’s last days, Kim and Terri carried through with that same special relationship which mom so lovingly treasured. From Merlin and Eileen’s complete doting,  to Gail and Paul’s magical, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and definitely, Bad Terri’s mischievousness….the list goes on. What we know is, mom Loved and was Loved.

Mom was a very special person who loved and touched (literally) each person she met. She put a smile on everyone’s face....as a matter of fact, the word from our family in Atlanta is, “she was hands down, the happiest person I’ve ever met in my life!”

We will always love you Mom, grandma, Julie, Mrs. B. and you will always be in our hearts….              Thank You
