Patrick J. Doherty, Age:50

Patrick "Pat" Doherty died on March 3rd at his home in Berwyn, IL He was born June 21, 1971, in Aurora, IL, son of Denise Bennett and William Doherty.

He is survived by his mother, Denise, and stepfather, Barry Bennett; his sister, Beth Doherty. He was preceded in death by his father, William Doherty.

Patrick grew up in Aurora, IL. He attended Holy Angels Elementary School and then graduated from West Aurora High School where he enjoyed football, tennis, baseball, and drawing - a pursuit he continued for the rest of his life.

He received an academic scholarship to the University of Southern California and then transferred to the University of Illinois, where he completed his B.A. in Economics. Not long after, a friend suggested he answer an ad in the paper for the youth karate instructor, and what followed was one of the greatest joys of his life. He studied Okinawan karate for nineteen years and taught youth self-defense and karate to children ages 5-17 through various non-profit organizations. The karate mothers loved him!

Patrick was a talented flameco guitarist, the author of two novels for young adults, and throughout his life worked as an English and History teacher, a martial arts instructor, a youth programs director and a salesman. A passionate surfer, he traveled to North Carolina, Texas, California, Florida, and Panama but logged the majority of his surf time on the frigid waves of Lake Michigan - and would explain to all who would listen that yes, you can surf an "inland sea.'

Patrick was a huge baseball fan, and an even bigger White Sox fan. He attended his first game at Comiskey Park at five years old and could be found every summer in his season seat out in right field (and passed the winters cheering for the Chicago Blackhawks).

Visitation will be Thursday, March 10th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at OLSON BURKE SULLIVAN Funeral Cremation Center, 6471 N Northwest Hwy, Chicago, IL 60631.
