Annette Louise Barbier, 66, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 5. She was born Sept. 29, 1950. A lifelong Chicago resident, Annette was a well-renowned conceptual artist who was an early pioneer in new media using technology in art. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally. During her 40-year career she received numerous grants from organizations including the Illinois Arts Council, the Propeller Fund, the NEA, and the Fulbright program. Annette taught in at Northwestern University for 25 years. During her tenure, she served as Chair of the Radio TV Film Department and established the Animate Arts Program. In 2005, she began teaching at Columbia College, where she was the first Department Chair of Interactive Arts and Media. She also taught in the Interdisciplinary Arts Program at Columbia College. Annette is survived by her husband and long-time artistic collaborator, Drew Browning; daughter, Celine; son-in-law, Aleksy, and sister, Joyce. A memorial in celebration of Annetteā€™s life will be held at her studio in the Albany Carroll Arts Building from 1- 6 p.m. Saturday, June 17 at 319 N. Albany Ave. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the American Bird Conservancy or the Natural Resource Defense Council.
