Beloved husband to the late Carol Chavez. Devoted Father, Soldier to our Nation, and dear Grandfather.

Walking with Grandpa
I like to walk with Grandpa
His steps are short like mine
He doesn’t say “ Now hurry up”
He always takes his time
I like to walk with Grandpa.
His eyes see things like mine do –
Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud,
Hidden drops of dew
Most people have to hurry,
They don’t stop and see –
I’m glad that God made Grandpa
Unrushed and young like me

Memorial Visitation Sunday, October 31, 2021, 12:00pm-3:00pm service at 2:30pm at Olson Burke/Sullivan Funeral & Cremation Center, 6471 N. Northwest Highway, Chicago, IL 60631.

Joe was always there to help me out with whatever I needed! He knew a little about everything and would stop what he was doing to put your needs first. His soft deep voice was always calming when the walls were falling down and if you could make him laugh you were in for a treat. I will remember his smile and his pipe smell. Miss you already Joe!

Head Football Coach-Chicago Bears Lake Forrest , Illinois

I wanted to write a short note to send my deepest sympathy to the family in your time of loss. I was recently hired but I did not get the opportunity to get to know Joe. I do know that all his colleagues at the grounds crew and the entire Chicago Bears organization enjoyed working along side him. I asked Ken Mrock about Joe and he had this to say " What a great man and we were all very fortunate to have him as a true example of what life is all about" May he rest in Peace. Matt Eberflus

"niece" Elk Grove Village , Illinois

I have only the fondest memories of “Uncle Joe”. I remember he and my dad taking us kids to Great America. I remember him scoring us the best spot on the lake to watch the Air & Water Show. On 4th of July, he would go golfing with my dad and the guys and then join us back at my parents’ house. Mostly, I remember him being one of my parents’ dearest friends, a kind, loving, generous man. I will truly miss him AND the wonderful smell of his pipe! All my love and deepest sympathy to Suzy, Kathy, Linda and Laura.

Co-worker Buffalo Grove , Illinois

I will miss Joe’s smiling face and wave in the morning. Whether he was operating the equipment or clearing the snow in the parking lot, he had the pipe in hand and was always working hard. He seemed like he truly enjoyed his work and was a steady and comforting presence at Halas Hall. We was kind and friendly, dedicated and loyal. We miss you Joe. Cliff Stein

Rick Gordon June 05, 2022

Co-worker at Soldier Field Crystal Lake , Illinois

As a part-time co-worker of Joe’s at Bears home games for the past 30+ years, I’ve had the opportunity to chat with him about various experiences with the team over the year. He always had a great story to tell. As a fixture on the Bears sidelines and at Halas Hall, Joe, always with his trademark pipe, will be missed. On behalf of the Visiting Clubhouse and Refs Room Crews, our condolences go out to Joe's family.
